Flood irrigation in China not only wastes water resources, but also tends to harden the land, reduce water permeability and cause losses to agriculture. Another way to change the status quo and carry out agricultural water-saving irrigation is needed, and drip irrigation technology has entered China in this way.  

According to the Eleventh Five-Year Plan for Water Resources Development, during the eleventh Five-Year Plan period, it is planned to provide safe drinking water for 160 million people with an investment budget of 65 billion yuan.  It plans to increase the water-saving irrigation area by 150 million mu and net increase the effective irrigation area by 30 million mu, with an investment budget of 148 billion yuan. The annual demand for water-saving irrigation materials and equipment for agriculture and rural water supply will reach more than 20 billion yuan.  

It is predicted that China's population will peak at 1.6 billion around 2030, and the food demand will increase to 640-720 million tons.  At current levels, it is projected that to meet this demand, the irrigated area will need to grow to 90 million mu, and the amount of water used for agricultural irrigation will increase from 400 billion cubic meters now to 665 billion cubic meters.  From the current situation of water supply and demand in China, such a large agricultural water supply is impossible to achieve, the agricultural water shortage will be 50-70 billion cubic meters.  There is only one way out, that is, to improve the utilization efficiency of agricultural irrigation water, and the development of water-saving agriculture is the only way.  If we increase the utilization rate of agricultural irrigation water from the current 0.47 to 0.7 of developed countries, water-saving irrigation alone can save 90 to 95 billion cubic meters of water, which can not only solve about 700 million tons of food production  

And 40 to 50 billion cubic meters of water could be used in other important areas of the national economy.
